Sweat trickles down Steve’s neck and winds through crevices beneath his shirt, as invasive as the sign’s message: “THE SPORTS COLLECTOR’S CURSE: THEY’VE PLAYED MORE GAMES THAN YOU CAN FIT IN YOUR APARTMENT.”

Coincidence, he thinks, loading his boxes onto a borrowed hand truck. He’s the one with the dubious judgment, after all, choosing the middle of a heatwave to move an SUV’s worth of baseball memorabilia—trading cards and pennants, bats and mitts, and the countless foul balls he caught in the stands as a kid.

Too many coincidences. Like the way those foul balls always came to him, no matter where he sat, no matter which ballpark. Yet of all the things his father’s questioned about him over the years—his obsession with poetry, his lack of obsession with girls—the old man never questioned that. Just laughed and called his Steve-O an amazing catch, a natural, so why the hell had he quit playing ball himself?

Steve pushes the hand truck down an aisle inside Building #2. It’s impossibly long, like the ones you traverse in a dream, with white concrete broken by red steel doors, each one grooved, padlocked, and identified by neat black numbers.

The hand truck’s left wheel is loose, moving ever so slightly faster than the other. Steve piled the boxes too high, and now they teeter toward the right. He pushes the hand truck faster, the handles threatening to slip from his sweaty grasp. He should have buried the boxes in the middle of nowhere like he’d planned. A placard points the way toward his destination: Units 240-280.

Steve rounds the corner, and that’s when he meets the girl with the dolls.
